GATX and Brookfield complete Wells Fargo rail portfolio acquisition
Wells Fargo →Wells Fargo’s operating-lease rail portfolio sale was announced on May 29, 2025 and completed on January 1, 2026. The buyer was a venture between GATX and Brookfield Infrastructure with institutional partners. At closing, approximately 101,000 railcars transferred for approximately USD 4.2 billion. The initial announcement had described 105,000 railcars and USD 4.4 billion; the closing disclosure reflects the final fleet count. GATX manages the acquired operating assets. Separately, Brookfield acquired the finance-lease portfolio, including approximately 22,000 railcars and 400 locomotives, also managed by GATX. The operating portfolio price should not be assigned to that separate transaction. GATX expected modest first-year earnings accretion followed by larger contributions.
