Data methodology and definitions

DataBane organizes disclosed private-markets information about firms, funds, people, transactions and institutional relationships. This page explains how to interpret the figures and where the limits of the data lie.

Assets under management

AUM is presented using the reporting entity’s stated measure when available. Total corporate AUM, alternative AUM, invested insurance assets, assets under administration and fund commitments are not interchangeable. Figures may be expressed in different currencies and at different reporting dates; they should not be summed without checking scope and duplication.

Allocations and strategies

An asset-class amount is not necessarily a percentage of a firm’s entire AUM. Strategy classifications may overlap. An “Invests” label indicates disclosed activity without a reported comparable monetary allocation. Missing values do not mean zero exposure.

Funds, performance and deals

Fund size, targets, vintages, fee terms, returns and transaction amounts are included where publicly disclosed. Funds can be affiliated with multiple entities. Performance figures may be calculated on different bases and dates. Disclosed transactions are not a complete record of all a firm’s investment activity.

People, relationships and news

People and relationship records describe identified public affiliations and counterparties; they may change over time. News summaries cover disclosed events and should be read using their publication dates. Absence of a record does not establish that a relationship or event does not exist.

Review, verification and corrections

Research records can contain internal provenance and review information. We aim to distinguish disclosed data from estimates and to retain reporting dates and measurement context. Publication does not guarantee that every public record is current, independently audited or exhaustive. Profiles may be corrected as new information becomes available.
